Il football americano a Ferrara dal 1979

La formazione delle AQUILE Ferrara, nata nel 1979, è una delle 5 squadre (Frogs Gallarate, Giaguari Torino, Rams Milano, Rhinos Milano) che nel 1981 ha dato vita all A.I.F.A. divenuta F.I.A.F. e associata al C.O.N.I. dal 1988: lo stesso emblema della Federazione, è costituito da cinque stelle alla base di caschi tricolori, rappresentanti simbolicamente le cinque franchigie fondatrici.

La stella delle AQUILE è forse l’unica che brilla ancora di luce propria non avendo finora subito fusioni o accorpamenti di zona. Se, infatti, i risultati ottenuti non sono sempre stati eclatanti, ciò è dovuto al fatto che le AQUILE hanno sempre schierato la propria formazione ai nastri di partenza dei Campionati sin qui disputati, riuscendo anche in più di un’occasione a competere ai massimi livelli con formazioni più ricche di titoli o di risorse umane e finanziarie.

Il SILVERBOWL del 1991 e del 1995,la wild card e i quarti di finale del 1983 e 1984 e soprattutto la semifinale di A1 del 1992, con i titoli giovanili del 1983, 1996 e 1997, sono la dimostrazione della continuità e dell’efficacia della franchigia di Ferrara, all’interno del panorama del football americano in Italia.

Dopo l’ennesimo accesso alla semifinale della Silver League del 1997, ottenuto nonostante la squadra estremamente rinnovata e ringiovanita, il 1998 era iniziato sotto i migliori auspici grazie alla possibilità di partecipare alla Golden League o serie A1; purtroppo a causa di problemi difficilmente superabili, tra i quali soprattutto quelli economici, le AQUILE sono state costrette a rinunciare alla disputa del Campionato, rischiando conseguentemente di non poter svolgere alcuna attività agonistica nel corso dell’anno.

La partecipazione su invito delle squadre organizzatrici, al Torneo IFL, è stato l’unico mezzo per mantenere in attività le AQUILE. Con Tigers e Blacks Torino, Saints Padova, Grifoni Belluno, Dogi Venezia e Draghi Udine, la squadra estense è giunta a disputare la semifinale contro i Tigers, formazione che poi si è aggiudicata il Torneo.

La stagione delle giovanili Under 21, iniziata nel settembre scorso, ha visto i DUCHI tornare al classico Campionato ad 11 giocatori anziché ad 8 e per la squadra guidata da Matteo Mantovani, l’impresa di assicurarsi il terzo titolo consecutivo, era sicuramente un obiettivo più difficile dei precedenti; nonostante ciò, con alterne fortune e buone partite i DUCHI hanno terminato la regular season guadagnandosi l’accesso alle semifinali contro i Gladiatori Roma, squadra forte e storicamente avversaria ostica per gli estensi.

Nella partita più bella e dura della stagione i ragazzi di Mantovani, con una prestazione sopra le righe, hanno battuto i romani e si sono guadagnati l’accesso alla finale contro i Lions Bergamo, dove però la netta superiorità degli avversari là ha fatto da padrone, lasciando comunque ai DUCHI la certezza di aver disputato un’altra bella stagione ricca di soddisfazioni.

Terminato il 1998 a Ferrara sembrava essere giunto il periodo più difficile della storia del football americano, ma la dirigenza tenacemente e nonostante i perenni problemi economici, ha raccolto le forze e muovendosi sul mercato ha radunato accanto al nucleo dei giocatori estensi rinforzi provenienti da Padova, Ravenna, Bologna e Venezia, formando una squadra di 45 atleti.

La guida tecnica è tornata a John Knight, che già nel 1995 portò la squadra a vincere il Silverbowl di fronte al pubblico del Paolo Mazza; insieme a lui le AQUILE sono giunte imbattute a disputare l’Italianbowl contro i Gladiatori Roma presso il Motovelodromo Vigorelli di Milano, ma questa volta la squadra estense ha ceduto ai capitolini.

The formation of the Aquile (Eagles) Ferrara, been born in 1979, is one of the 5 teams (Frogs Gallarate, Jaguars Turin, Rams Milan, Rhinos Milan) that in 1981 has given life to A.I.F.A. which become F.I.A.F. (Italian Federation of American Football) and it is in partnership to the C.O.N.I. from 1988: the very emblem of the Federation, constituted by five stars at the base of tricolor helmets, represents symbolically the five founder-teams. The star of the Aquile is perhaps the only one that shines still of proper light not having suffered fusions or area-mergings till now. If, in fact, the gotten results have not always been great, this is due to the fact that the Aquile have always lined up their formation to the start-ribbons of the Championships until here disputed, also succeeding in more than an occasion to compete with honor vs. formations richer in titles or human and financial resources. The'91 and '95 SILVERBOWLs , the '83 and '84 Wild Cards and the ending quarters , and especially the '92 A1 semifinal , with the '83, '96 and '97 Young titles, are the demonstration of the Ferrara continuity and the efficiency inside the panorama of the American football in Italy. After access to the 1997 Silver League semifinal, gotten despite the extremely renewed square and rejuvenated, the 1998 had begun under the best auspices thanks to the possibility to participate in the Golden League or A1 series. Unfortunately, unsurmountable problems , among which above all those economic ones, have forced the Aquile to give up the dispute of the FIAF Championship, the risk was not to be able to develop any competitive activity during the consequent year . The unique way to maintain the team in activity was to partecipate to the IFL (Italian Football League) Tournament. With Tigers and Blacks Turin, Saints Padua, Grifoni Belluno, Dogi Venice and Draghi Udine, the Estense (i.e. of Ferrara region) team has reached to dispute the semifinal against the Tigers, formation that has awarded the Tournament. Last season of the Under 21, begun in September'98, has seen the Duchi (Dukes) return to the classical 11 players Championship rather than to 8 players one. The enterprise to win the third consecutive title for the team driven by Matteo Mantovani, was surely much more difficult objective than the precedents. Against all odds the Duchi have finished the regular season accessing the semifinals against the Gladiatori Rome, historically tiresome antagonist of the Estensis. In the most beautiful and hard game of the season the boys of the coach Mantovani, with a performance above the lines, have beaten the Romans and earned the access to the Youngbowl against the Lions Bergamo, which ended unfortunately for the team because of clear superiority of the Lions. Finished 1998, Ferrara seemed to arrive to the most difficult period of its history of the American football, but executive board has picked up strengths and managed to create a team of 45 athletes deriving not only from Ferrara but also from Padua, Ravenna, Bologna and Venice. The technical guide has returned to John Knight, that already in 1995 brought the team to the Silverbowl victory ; together with him the Aquile have come unbeaten to dispute the Italianbowl against the Gladiatori in Milan but this time the Ferrara team has surrendered to the Romans.
